BOYSCAST FELLOWSHIP SCHEME

 

 

 

Fellowships under the Programme, "Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science and Technology" (Boyscast) are awarded to Indian Nationals for conducting advance research or undergoing soecialised training in overseas research laboratories/ institutes in chosen frontline areas of science and technology.

The selected areas are:

Life Sciences: Gene therapy, Site directed mutagenesis, marco molecular structure, Vaccinology, Magnetic Encephalograph, Brain mapping, Functional NMR/ln Vivo spectroscopy. Biomedical Engineering, Transplant Biology, Ecological Engineering, Reproductive Biology, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Industrial microbiology, Plant-microbe interaction, Crop Biotechnology including molecular mapping, marker assisted plant breeding, transgenic plants, Plant Genetic Resources, Molecular biology of biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, drought and salinity resistance etc., Evolutionary biology.

Chemical Sciences: Organometallics, Heterogeneous Catalysis, Novel Materials, Bio Sensor, Bioinorganic and biomimetic chemistry, Molecular Electronic Structure and dynamics. Laser Photodynamics, Polymer and Surface Chemistry, Marine Chemistry, Laser induced photodynamics.

Physical Sciences: Electronic materials and Processing, nonlinear Optics and Optical Materials, Monophase Materials, Optoelectronics, Gradient-Index and Micro-optics, Semi-Conductor Physics, Ultrafast Phenomena Plasma, Diagnostic Techniques, Development of Synchrotron Radiation sources.

Earth & Atmospheric Sciences:
Geotectonic models and experiments, Thermodynamics of multiphase systems. Isotope hydrology and glaciology, Isotope and Chemical tracers for Oceanography, Limnology, Global of the Indian lithosphere, Crust-mentle interaction. Seismic tomography, Wide angle MCS and MRP of marine sequences and related data processing. Nuclear waste disposal. Modelling in earth system science, Petroleum Engineering, Petroleum Geology and engineering Geology, Atmospheric Boundary layer. Atmospheric Chemistry & air pollution, Global electric circuit, Near earth space environment. Regional and global climate studies and predictions.

Engineering Sciences:

Computer and Information Sciences: Optical communication and computation, Mobile computing and communication, Heterogeneous computing, Virtual reality. Machine intelligence, Biocomputing, Total Quality Management (TQM), Laser Materials Processing, Transducer and Sensor Technology, Vision Systems, Intelligent and Green Manufacturing, Recycling in manufacturing. Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) System Design, Robotics and Automation, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Advanced Mechanical Design, Production Processes, Testing and Quality Control Precision Engineering.

Mathematical Sciences:
Computational aspects of Geometry and Algebra, Design of efficient Numerical/Qualitative methods for solving differential equations (both ODE and PDE), Stochastic process modelling, Algebric and Geometrical methods in Control theory. Exploratory Data Analysis, Dynamical systems, Game Theory, Combinatorial Optimization, Spectral and Inverse Spectral Theory, Wavelet Analysis, Graph Theory, Fuzzy/Hazy/Rough set theory. Mathematical logic. Expert Systems and Artificial intelligence, Computability and complexity theories, parallel computing and artificial neural net theory.

Eligibility:
1. The applicants should possess one of the following degrees or equivalent: Master in Engineering orTechnology/M.D. in Medicine/Ph.D. in Science and Technology.
2. They should be less than 35 years of age (on the date of application).
3. The candidate should hold regular position in recognised Science and Technology Institution and should be actively engaged in research in the relevant area.
4. An Institution abroad should have expressed its willingness to accept the applicant on a BOYSCAST fellowship for training/ research based on their proposed research work plan, past research experience and publication record indicating, period of stay necessary to complete the work.

Sponsorship: Candidates must be officially sponsored (their applications to be formally forwarded) by their employer/ head of the institution or agency with the commitment to depute them for research/ training under BOYSCAST scheme.

Details of the award:
1. The candidates should themselves correspond with the research institution abroad for their placement. Institution which are to be visited should have to be recognised outstanding institutions where major developments in chosen areas are in progress.
2. The fellowships are awarded for a period of three months to one year. Candidates should specify the period (based on correspondence with host institution) at the time of application. It will not be possible to extend peroid of stay.
3. The fellowship awarded will be US $ 1500 per month (if the duration is for a period above six and up to twelve months) and US $ 1800 per month (for a period of three to six anonths) or equivalent amount , in foreign exchange of the country of research/training. In addition, personal contingent grant ranging from Rs. 5,000/- to Rs. 10,000/- depending on the duration of the fellowship would also be provided.
4. Cost of air passage in economy class by Air India for joining overseas laboratory and back.
5. Rules governing payment of salary, seniority, leave, medical benefits, gratuity, GPF and pensions etc. of the institution to which a fellow belongs would continue to be applicable. However, no liability under these rules will be borne by DST.
6. Medical Insurance expenses will be met by the fellow out of the maintenance allowance.
7. The candidates selected for the award of BOYSCAST fellowship should commence their research/ training before the end of the financial year in which the award is given. Failure to do so would render them forfeit the award.
8. Every selected BOYSCAST fellow shall be required to execute a bond as per the rules for the parent institute before proceeding on fellowship and shall also be required to a service bond to serve in India for-at least three years after return to India.
9. If the fellow does not return to India or gets a job opportunity overseas on completion of the fellowship, he/ she will be required re-imburse the whole of the expenditure incurred on him/ her during the fellowship period.
