Cochin University CUSAT Admissions 2009

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) invites applicatons from eligible candidates for admission to the academic programmes for the year 2008-09 as listed below. Admissions are based on
Common Admission Test (CAT)/
Departmental Admission Test (DAT)/
Test for Lateral Entry (LET).

Eligibility conditions and other particulars appear in the detailed notification published in the website www.cusat.nic.in. Candidates who have appeared/are appearing for their final qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply.

All UGC specified degrees, diplomas etc. awarded by UGC approved Statutory Universities are recognized by this University for admission to various courses. However, Distance Education Courses will be considered as recognized, only if they are further approved by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi also. On-line registration/sale of OMR Application will commence 28-02-2009 only

Those who are applying for First Degree Programmes
in Engineering & Technology (B.Tech and Integrated M.Sc. in Photonics) : the CAT will be conducted on all India basis with test centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Ranchi, Varanasi, Allahabad, Jamshedpur, Kota and all district head quarters of Kerala.

Those who are applying for PG Programmes / LL.B / both Programmes : the CAT will be conducted only in the Centres at all the district head quarters of Kerala.

LET will be conducted at Kochi Centre only.

The University reserves the right to cancel any or all the notified test centres for administrative reasons including dates/rules and regulations relating to programmes of study, eligibility, reservation, admission criteria, fee structure and other relevant matters. All disputes related to CAT/DAT/LET shall be subject to the jurisdiction of Courts at Kochi only. Appearance
in the CAT or figuring in the Rank list does not ipso facto confer any right for admission to a particular course unless found suitable as per the eligibility criteria as amended from time to time by the University.

1. ADMISSIONS THROUGH CAT-ONLINE REGISTRATION

Applicants for the following programmes are required to take the CAT, except where
specifically indicated otherwise

1.1 FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES

a. B.Tech. in Civil Engg.**, Computer Science & Engg.**, Electrical & Electronics Engg.**, Electronics & Communication Engg.**, Information Technology**, Mechanical Engg.**, Safety & Fire Engg.**.

b. B.Tech. in Polymer Science & Rubber Technology

c. Five Year Integrated M.Sc. in Photonics

Eduational Qualification for a, b & c above: Pass in Plus Two Examination of the State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.

d. B.Tech. in Instrumentation
Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto
securing a minimum of 60% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together, with at least 55% in Mathematics separately.

e. B.Tech. in Marine Engg. ** (Residential Programme)

1) Pass in Plus Two or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% marks and should have obtained 50% marks in English at 10th or 12th standards.

2) Vocational/Diploma students are not eligible to apply.

3) The Maximum age limit prescribed is 20 years as on 1st October 2009.

4) Eligibility for admission will be based on directions from the DG Shipping (India).

f. B.Tech. in Naval Architecture & Ship Building.

Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto with a First Class securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics as well as for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.

g. 5 Year LL.B. (Hons.) (Cost sharing course)

1. Pass in Plus Two examination with 60% marks in Science / Commerce group or 55% marks in Arts / Humanities. 2.Should not have completed 21 years of age on 1st January of the year of admission.

h. SC/ST candidates are eligible for admission to the courses mentioned under 1.1
above if they have pass marks in the qualifying examination except in B.Tech. Marine Engineering Programme.

1.2 POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

LL.M.

Bachelor�s degree in Law with at least 45% marks.

M.A. Hindi Language and Literature
B.A./B.Sc. degree with Hindi as a subject of study with at least 45% marks in Hindi.

M.B.A. (Full-time / Part-time*).
A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. * conditions apply.

M.B.A. (International Business)
A degree in any subject recognized by the University with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.

M.C.A.*** offered by CUSAT and its recognized institutions.
Any graduate with Mathematics as one of the main or subsidiary subjects or graduate in Electronics/Computer Science/Computer Applications/Engg./Technology with aggregate 55% marks in all subjects other than Languages and Humanities.

M.Sc. Applied Chemistry
B.Sc. degree with Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry/Environmental Chemistry/Industrial
Chemistry/Petrochemicals as main, with Mathematics as one of the subsidiary subjects with at least 55% marks in the main subject.

M. Sc. Biotechnology
Bachelor�s degree in any branch of Life Sciences including Agricultural and Medical
Science or Chemical Science or Chemical Engg. with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.

M.Sc. Electronic Science (with specialisation in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics Microwave Electronics and Computer Technology)

First class B.Sc. degree with not less than 60% aggregate marks in Electronics or Physics.

M. Sc. Environmental Technology
Bachelor�s degree in Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries, or Engg. (Civil/ Public Health/ Environmental or Chemical) or Life Sciences/ Environmental Sciences/Zoology/Botany/Microbiology with 55% marks.

M. Sc. Hydrochemistry
B.Sc. degree in Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries or B.Sc. degree of any University in Kerala with Polymer Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry/ Petrochemicals/Environment & Water Management as the main subject and Mathematics and Physics/Computer Science, as subsidiaries with 55% marks in the respective main subject.

M. Sc. Industrial Fisheries
Bachelor�s degree in Zoology/Botany/Fisheries with at least 55% marks in the optional subjects. Bachelor�s degree in Fisheries includes bachelor�s degree in Industrial Fisheries, Aquaculture/Fishery Science/ Industrial Fish and Fisheries/BFSC in Nautical science.

M. Sc. Marine Biology
B.Sc. degree with any branch of Life Sciences such as Aquaculture, Bio-chemistry,
Biotechnology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology as a main subject or B.Sc. degree
in Fishery Science with at least 55% marks in the optional subjects.

M. Sc. Marine Geology
Bachelor�s degree, in Geology/ Maths/ Physics/ Chemistry with 55% aggregate marks for optionals.

M. Sc. Marine Geophysics
B.Sc. degree with at least 55% aggregate marks in (a) Geology (main) with Mathematics
and Physics or Chemistry as subsidiaries (b) Physics (main) with Mathematics and Geology or Chemistry or Electronics as subsidiaries (c) Mathematics (main) with Physics and Geology or Chemistry as subsidiaries.

M. Sc. Mathematics
B.Sc. degree with Mathematics main, with at least 55% marks for optional subjects taken together.

M. Sc. Meteorology
B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.

M. Sc. Oceanography
B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.

M. Sc. Physics
B.Sc. degree with Physics main and Mathematics as subsidiary with at least 55% marks in Physics.

M. Sc. Statistics
B.Sc. degree in Mathematics or Statistics with at least 55% marks for optional subjects taken together.

SC/ST candidates are eligible for admission to the courses mentioned under 1.2
above if they have pass marks in the qualifying examination.

2. M.TECH. PROGRAMMES

Admissions to the following M.Tech. programmes are based on valid GATE score as prescribed under the academic regulations specific to each programme. Candidates
not possessing GATE may also apply, but will be considered only if GATE qualified candidates are not available. In such cases, admissions will be based on the Departmental Aptitude Test (DAT).

M. Tech. Atmospheric Science
1. M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Meteorology, Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, Space Physics with a First Class (60%) marks from any recognized university or
institution.
2. A valid GATE score or a pass in the Joint UGC CSIR Test (NET) for JRF.

M. Tech. Computer Aided Structural Analysis & Design

1. B.Tech or Equivalent degree in Naval Architecture and Ship building/Civil Engg./
Mechanical Engg. with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or
institution

SC/ST candidates are eligible for admission to the courses mentioned under 2 above if they have pass marks in the qualifying examination and a valid GATE score (in the absence of GATE qualified candidates, candidates not possessing GATE will be considered). Candidates are advised to ascertain the areas of research and the availability of vacancies from the Departments/Schools or Recognized Institutions before-hand. (G) ON-LINE REGISTRATION (Non – Keralites Only)

On-line applications will be considered for all B.Tech Programmes including Lateral
Entry Programmes, 5 Year Integrated M.Sc in Photonics, 5 year LL.B (Hons.), Post
Graduate Programmes, M.Tech Programmes (except M.Tech. Marine Bio-Technology), M.A Translation in German & Russian.

Fee Details:
Rs. 750/- for General Category Candidates and Rs. 375/- for SC/ST Category (upto three programmes)
Rs. 5750/- for candidates who apply under NRI Quota (upto three programmes)
Rs. 100/- for General Category and Rs. 50/- for SC/ST Category for each additional
programme exceeding three.

Mode of payment: Demand Draft taken from State Bank of India Or State Bank allied Banks drawn in favour of Registrar, CUSAT payable at Ernakulam only will be accepted.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. For M.Phil, Ph.D, Diploma and Certificate programmes, applications can be had from the concerned Departments/Schools/Centres either directly or by post.

M.Phil & Ph.D. Programmes � Rs.750/- for general category and Rs. 375/- for
SC/ST category. Diploma & Certificate Programmes – Rs.100/- for general category and Rs.50/- for SC/ST category.

Mode of payment: Demand Draft taken from State Bank of India Or State Bank allied Banks drawn in favour of Registrar, CUSAT payable at Ernakulam only will be accepted.

2. M.Tech. Marine Bio-Technology: Selection of candidates is done by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on behalf of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India through a National Test alongwith all such examinations conducted by the University (JNU) . 3. Demand Drafts issued by Exchange Companies/Private Banks will not be accepted.
Candidate should write his/her Name and Registration Number (obtained at the time of Online Registration) on upper left hand corner of the reverse side of the DD. The DD should be taken on or after the date of CAT 2009 Notification. DD taken after the last date fixed for the submission of application will not be accepted.

6. Candidates who apply for both B.Tech Programmes and Lateral Entry Programmes through online should remit the required fees specified for each programme.

7. Entry requirements for each Programme are given under �Eligibility Criteria�. The responsibility for ensuring satisfactory compliance to the prescribed criteria is vested solely with the applicant. Claims found untenable upon subsequent scrutiny shall result in summary disqualification of the applicant concerned and cancellation of any or all admission processes undergone.

8. The choice of the Test Subject/Test Centre/Course Code is the sole responsibility of the applicant and the selection once exercised in the Application Form shall be final and irrevocable.

9. The Distribution of Seats among Keralites and Non -Keralites will be governed by
Rules/Regulations of the University in force.

8. FOREIGN NATIONAL STUDENTS
1. Foreign National students are exempted from the requirement of admission test (CAT/DAT) for the Academic Programmes of the university. They can apply either on self financing basis or through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) attached to the Ministry of Human Resources Development of the Govt. of India (ICCR website http://www.iccrindia.org ). They are required to submit the application through online for the academic programme of the University on payment of US$ 100 by way of Demand Draft / Pay order/Any other instrument (which does not involve collection charges on the part of the University) in favour of Registrar, CUSAT payable at New York.

2. Applicants who have successfully Registered online with CUSAT may forward an
advance copy of the confirmation page along with payment (D.D/Pay Order etc) and
relevant documents to the following address. The original confirmation page should be forwarded with necessary documents through the Embassy of India in the respective country.

9. HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE
ONLINE REGISTRATION:

I. Candidates are instructed to read thoroughly all sections of Key Information
published in the website : www.cusat.nic.in before filling up the application

II. Candidates are required to fill in all details correctly (SC/ST, Communal /Special
Reservation, under OEC etc.) failing which the claim under the said categories will
not be considered at all.

III. Applications without the required amount of Demand Draft will be rejected.

IV. Incomplete form will not be accepted by the system. Any error in the entries leading
to the rejection of the application form shall be the sole responsibility of the candidate.
Hence the form must be filled with the utmost attention without making any error.

V. Detailed instruction is given in the Registration module in the website.

VI. If any entries are incorrect /missing, press the back button for going back to the
entry form.

VII. If the candidate is satisfied with the entries, press the �Confirm� button for
completing the registration process. Please wait for the Confirmation Page to be
displayed and take two print out. Candidate should sent one copy alongwith DD
to Director, IRAA and retain one copy of confirmation page for their reference.

VIII. Candidate are advised to note down the Registration Number for downloading
the Admit Card. Admit Card can be downloaded by submitting candidate�s
Registration Number. IX. Request for change of centre will not be entertained under any circumstances.

10. HOW TO FILL UP OMR APPLICATION

I. Candidates are instructed to read thoroughly the instruction sheet given along with
the OMR applications.

II. Please see the definitions given under Keralites.

III. Candidates are required to mark each response in the OMR sheet neatly and
correctly. (SC/ST, Communal /Special Reservation, under OEC etc.) failing which the claim under the said categories will not be considered at all.

IV. Photocopy of the OMR application will not be accepted.

V. Candidates should attach Demand Draft for each additional programmes exceeding
�three� along with the OMR application.

VI. Candidates opting NRI quota should attach Demand Draft for Rs.5000/- along with
the OMR application.

VII. Applications without the sufficient amount of Demand Draft will not be considered
for option V and VI above.

VIII. Incomplete applications in any respect will summarily be rejected.

IX. No separate admit card will be sent to your address. Please download the admit
card from the website www.cusat.nic.in . The Admit Card can be downloaded by
submitting candidate�s Application number and date of birth.

12. RETURN OF THE CONFIRMATION PAGE/ FILLED IN OMR
APPLICATIONS

i Confirmation page of the Online application along with the DD or OMR
application with DD for additional courses, if any should reach �The Director,
IRAA Unit, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin University P.O.,
Kochi � 682 022�on or before the last date prescribed above either by Speed or
Registered Post.

ii Sale of Application forms for the programmes listed under 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4
commences on 28.02.2009. Filled in applications should reach the concerned
Departments/Schools on or before 08.04.2009.
