IELTS is not compulsory.but some universities use it.
IELTS is available in two formats - Academic and General Training.
The Academic Modules assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses should be based on the results of these modules.
The General Training Modules emphasize base survival skills in a broad social and educational context General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to underrate work experience or training programmes not ac degree level, or for immigration purposes to Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The Genera Training modules are not offered at all test administrations.

Test Format
Candidates are tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules whether Academic or General Training. It is the responsibility of the candidate to tell the Administrator which version. Academic or General Training, they need to take.
The tests are designed to cover the full range of ability from non-user to expert user.
The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing - must be completed in one day. No break is given between the three modules. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test centre, seven days before or after the other three modules.

Basically IELTS is not needed. The only thing is you need to demonstrate them that your English Language ability is enough to study in UK. IELTS is only an option to show them that you can.

While IELTS is the most widely accepted English language proficiency test for international students wishing to study in the UK, it's not universally mandatory. Here's a breakdown to help you understand your options:

Universities:
  • Most UK universities require proof of English language proficiency. This is often done through IELTS, but other accepted tests include TOEFL, Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic), and Cambridge English exams.
  • Universities usually set their own minimum score requirements, which vary depending on the program level and institution. It's crucial to check the specific requirements of the universities you're interested in.

Visa requirements:
  • To obtain a Tier 4 student visa for studying in the UK, you usually need to demonstrate English language proficiency at a specific level set by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). This level typically aligns with the university's requirements.
  • For most undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the UKVI requires an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher with no sub-score below 5.5. However, specific programs or visa categories might have varying requirements.

Next steps:
  • Identify the universities and programs you're interested in.
  • Visit their websites to check their specific English language proficiency requirements.
  • Explore accepted tests other than IELTS, if applicable.
  • If unsure, contact the university admissions office directly for clarification.
Remember, early planning and research are crucial. Understanding the English language requirements for both universities and visas will help you make informed decisions and choose the most suitable route for your study in UK.
