Design: Smarter than MBA, Better than most careers
#1
In the past there used to be a mad rush for MBA as it was thought of as a smart gateway to a great career. But that was yesterday. Increased business specialization and a growing demand for work specialists is eroding the demand for generalist MBA passouts. Also the mindless rush for joining a professional MBA programme before getting sufficient work experience is also contributing to a career confusion as many students fail to full understand their career aspirations due to lack of sufficient industry exposure and growing industry specialization needs. Today’s highly competitive business environment is creating the need of focused leaders and creative specialists that can beat competition and win over new markets using practiced innovations and not just applying management theories. Besides not everyone wants to be a regular manager as some of us are born creative souls that thrive in interesting jobs that involve enhanced imagination, and increased design applicability. Welcome to world where its ok to dream, regular to create out of the box solutions using one’s own unending passion and info excellence. Design is one such career that allows you to do what you love doing and gets you paid handsomely too!
Designers start early and have longer careers too

While for the regular MBA programme you need to do your graduation, for joining a reputed design college you just need to be a 12 pass-out. So designers get a 3 year head-start in their careers as compared to MBA professionals. Besides while most managers and leaders generally retire in their late fifties or sixties designers continue to do well their late old age (nineties too) as a fertile and a creative brain never ever tires and retires (with its admirers growing with every passing year!. So purely from a earning capacity and intellectual satisfaction (and not to mention the in built celebrity fame) a design career has many more plusses than the regular MBA program. Creative people have always an inner ‘design calling’ which gets louder and louder if we don’t get into design careers earlier. Besides successful designers tend to earn decent salaries much faster than their MBA counterparts as they can showcase their unique excellence far faster. For example a designer intern can win a India recognized industry award thanks to the unique appeal of his/her design offering and be rewarded with multiple promotions to push him into a leadership position in less than a year’s time; jump starting his career seniority faster than any other career option. Whereas an MBA graduate will need at least a year to be promoted from a regular probation period (known as Management Trainee in most firms), to becoming a full fledged manager and become a leader after spending some years as a manager. No wonder many people are looking beyond the MBA sheen asn doing far better as designers with lifelong growth prospects.
