for IIT Roorkee Ph.D Admissions 2009

An applicant possessing the following qualifications in appropriate area shall be eligible to apply for admission for Ph.D. programme of the Institute. Masters degree in Engineering / Technology/Architecture/Urban & Rural Planning/Sciences/ Humanities & Social Sciences and Management in respective discipline or equivalent with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the Institute wherever letter grades are awarded; or 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/ semesters) where marks are awarded.

OR
Applicants with B.Tech./B.Arch. degree or equivalent in respective discipline with excellent academic record (with a minimum CGPA of 7.00 on a 10 point scale or equivalent or 70% marks) may be considered eligible for admission.

Applicants for admission for full-time studies who do not possess a M.Tech./ M.Arch./ MURP degree or equivalent in the relevant field must have a valid GATE score (at least 75 percentile) for Engineering / Technology/ Science disciplines or must have qualified national level fellowship examinations such as NET (JRF/LS) conducted by UGC/CSIR for Science/ Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines.

Engineering/Architecture graduates from any IIT/erstwhile University of Roorkee having CGPA Score > 8.00 or marks > 80% are also eligible for admission without GATE score .


RESERVATION/RELAXATION
for IIT Roorkee Ph.D Admissions 2009

a) Relaxation in eligibility requirement in terms of minimum CGPA upto 5.5 or 55% marks in aggregate will be given to SC, ST and Persons with Disability (PD) applicants and those with M.A. English (for admission to Ph.D. English in the Deptt. of Humanities and Social Sciences of IIT Roorkee) as per Institute regulations.

b) Persons with Disability (PD) applicants may be permitted relaxation in eligibility requirement of CGPA to 5.5 on a 10 point scale or equivalent, or to 55%

Duration of The Programme:

The programme is spread over a period of three years consisting of six semesters. The students study courses for five semesters at the University and do a Software Development Project (SDP) in the sixth semester in some reputed industry.

DISTANCE EDUCATION MODE:

This programme is also spread over a period of three years consisting of six semesters. The students study
courses for five semesters and do a software development project in the sixth semester in the Institution/ Industry recognized by TU. The objective of the programme is to provide an opportunity to those students who want to upgrade their studies/ knowledge through distance education as well as for those who are working in any organization. The main thrust in the programme will be to polish the professional aptitude of the students through lectures by the experts in their respective fields.

Eligibility
(a) For Open Merit and SC/ST Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural,Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 50% marks.

(b) For Sponsored Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological,Agricultural, Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, or Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 55% marks.
Such candidates must have a minimum of two years of full time work experience in a registered firm/company/industry/educational and research institutions/any Government Department of Government Organization in the relevant field in which admission is being sought. The employer in the sponsorship certificate must indicate that the fee will be borne by the sponsoring organization and the candidate will not be withdrawn before the completion of the programme. The fee of the sponsored candidates shall be paid by the sponsoring agency from the companys bank account.

MSc (CHEMISTRY)/ MSc (MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTING)/ MSc(PHYSICS)

Eligibility:
Recognised Bachelors degree in Science of minimum 3 years duration with 50% marks in aggregate
And Chemistry as one of the subjects for MSc (Chemistry). Likewise, Mathematics for MSc
(Mathematics and Computing), and Physics, for MSc (Physics) at the graduation level and
each candidate has to qualify in the entrance test to be conducted by the University.

ME/MTech PROGRAMME

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
Admission to all the ME/MTech programmes shall be made on the basis of merit of the Entrance test to be conducted by the Thapar University. GATE Score card shall be used for the purpose of scholarship only. Admission to ME/MTech programme will be open to a candidate who obtains at least 50% marks in the aggregate in the qualifying examination from a recognised University.

PhD PROGRAMME

TU offers PhD programme in almost all specializations of Engineering, Technology, Management and Sciences in the following Departments/Schools of the University (currently 251 PhD candidates are working for their PhD degrees in the University.

ELIGIBILITY

(i) A candidate seeking admission to the PhD programme must have obtained ME/MTech/MPhil/ MCA/MSc/MA or equivalent degree in relevant discipline with minimum of 6.00 CGPA (on 10 point-scale) or 55% marks in aggregate where marks are awarded or NET qualified.

(ii) In exceptional cases, candidates with BE/BTech degree or equivalent in respective discipline with excellent academic record, minimum CGPA of 9.00 (on 10 point scale) or in marks 80% in aggregate, may be considered for direct admission. Relaxation of CGPA to 7 on a 10 point scale or in marks to 65% for the minimum eligibility conditions may be permitted for candidates with a BE/BTech degree or equivalent who have a minimum of 3 years of professional and/or research experience in the area in which the admission is
sought. However, candidates admitted with BE/BTech or equivalent qualification will be registered for PhD after successful completion of at least four post-graduate level courses as prescribed by the concerned Department/School within a period of two years from the date of provisional registration. A minimum CGPA of 6 on a 10-point scale should be earned in the courses prescribed by the concerned Department/School.

(iii) Part-time studies leading to PhD degree are permitted for local professionally employed personnel such as working engineers, scientists and teachers from R&D establishments Corporate Sectors and recognized educational institutions. Candidates working within a radius of 100 KM should be a regular employee of the
organisation at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the area to which admission is sought.

(iv) Candidates from R&D establishment, Corporate Sectors and recognised educational institutions (recognised by the University) may be considered for admission as external candidates. Such candidates would be required to work in the University for a minimum period of 6 months in one or two spells.

Notes:
(a) No residency requirement for TU qualified candidates.
(b) Part-time candidates are required to submit the “No Objection Certificate” from their parent organisations/ departments/ schools/ centres stating that the candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis and that the candidate’s official duties permit him to devote sufficient time for research.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into PhD Programme

PhD in Engineering

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master�s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Bachelor�s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Bachelor�s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor�s level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering.The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70%
marks in Master�s level with consistent first class at other levels.

v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master�s level.

vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Design

For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master�s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii) Bachelor�s degree in Design or Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iv) Bachelor�s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor�s level.

vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year
professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Science

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following

For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master�s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:

I) REGULAR
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.

II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

Iii) SELF-FINANCED
A student in this category works full-time or part-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.

v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.

vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.

III) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.

IV) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Financial aid (Assistantship/Scholarship) is provided for M.Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc.-Ph.D.(Dual Degree) Programmes. Tuition fee waiver of 50% is provided for M.Sc. (2 years)/M.Sc-Ph.D. (Dual Degree) students after first Semester. Sponsored and part-time candidates are also considered for M.Tech., M.Des. and Ph.D. Programmes. Sponsored candidates do not require GATE qualification. Several attractive Fellowships from Industries/DAE are also available. National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) announces admissions to the following programmes

PGDIE Programme

PGDIE is one of the very few courses that enjoy corporate excellence for over three decades. The programme focuses on SCM, IT and Systems,Marketing, Finance and HR Management. PGDIE has evolved as a course for developing Managers with cross- functional skills.


Admission Procedure

Every candidate has to qualify through GATE(2008 & 2009). This will be followed by Group Discussion and Interview of the short listed candidates to be held at NITIE, Mumbai. Work experience will be given suitable weightage. Candidates need to submit a photocopy of GATE score card / printout of GATE score from website. Selection of Industry sponsored candidates with 2 years industry experience is through personal interview only (NO GATE SCORE REQUIRED).

Fellowship Programme
The Fellow Programme aims at developing outstanding scholars who explore the inexact science of management with a beyond the obvious perspective.

Eligibility

a. Direct Candidates:
Master�s Degree or equivalent with minimum first class in Engineering / Technology / Pure Science / Business Management or Administration / Commerce / Social Science / Humanities/Biological Science.
Final year Student appearing for the Master�s Degree Examination in Engineering / Technology / Pure Science / Business Management or Administration / Commerce / Social Science / Humanities/ Biological Science can also apply. Such candidate if selected will be provisionally admitted provided they complete all requirements for obtaining their master�s degree before 30 June. The admission of these candidates will remain provisional until they produce the mark sheet proving that they satisfy the eligibility criteria. The dead line for submitting the final year mark sheet is 31 Dec.

b. External and Sponsored Candidates:
The external candidate should have a minimum of 2 years work experience in industry/academia/government and they must produce a �No Objection Certificate� from their employing organisations along with an undertaking that arrangements, as per the requirement of and to the satisfaction of NITIE, will be made by the organisation to enable the candidate to pursue the fellow programme.

Candidate from both (Direct / External) categories should earn their course credit requirement by undergoing one-year full time course work. The Research committee shall keep in mind the objective and the academic activities of the institute while selecting candidate for Fellow Programme.
