ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR M.TECH./M.ARCH./MURP PROGRAMMES IIT ROORKEE

A minimum aggregate score of 60% or 6.00 CGPA on 10 point scale for General/ OBC candidates and 55% or 5.50 CGPA on 10 point scale for SC/ST/PD candidates at the qualifying degree is essential for all the above programmes.

ADMISSION CRITERIA for M.TECH./M.ARCH./MURP PROGRAMMES IIT ROORKEE

Admission will be made on the basis of either GATE percentile only or GATE percentile
and Interview/Written Test. For Sponsored candidates the admission will be on the basis of Interview/Written Test and relevant experience. There will be cut offs for calling the candidates for Interview/Written Test and/or for preparing merit list for different programmes for different categories of candidates.

B.Tech. degree holders from IITs with minimum CGPA of 8.00 on 10 point scale will
also be eligible for admission with MHRD assistantship without GATE score upto
10% of the Intake.

PhD PROGRAMME

TU offers PhD programme in almost all specializations of Engineering, Technology, Management and Sciences in the following Departments/Schools of the University (currently 251 PhD candidates are working for their PhD degrees in the University.

ELIGIBILITY

(i) A candidate seeking admission to the PhD programme must have obtained ME/MTech/MPhil/ MCA/MSc/MA or equivalent degree in relevant discipline with minimum of 6.00 CGPA (on 10 point-scale) or 55% marks in aggregate where marks are awarded or NET qualified.

(ii) In exceptional cases, candidates with BE/BTech degree or equivalent in respective discipline with excellent academic record, minimum CGPA of 9.00 (on 10 point scale) or in marks 80% in aggregate, may be considered for direct admission. Relaxation of CGPA to 7 on a 10 point scale or in marks to 65% for the minimum eligibility conditions may be permitted for candidates with a BE/BTech degree or equivalent who have a minimum of 3 years of professional and/or research experience in the area in which the admission is
sought. However, candidates admitted with BE/BTech or equivalent qualification will be registered for PhD after successful completion of at least four post-graduate level courses as prescribed by the concerned Department/School within a period of two years from the date of provisional registration. A minimum CGPA of 6 on a 10-point scale should be earned in the courses prescribed by the concerned Department/School.

(iii) Part-time studies leading to PhD degree are permitted for local professionally employed personnel such as working engineers, scientists and teachers from R&D establishments Corporate Sectors and recognized educational institutions. Candidates working within a radius of 100 KM should be a regular employee of the
organisation at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the area to which admission is sought.

(iv) Candidates from R&D establishment, Corporate Sectors and recognised educational institutions (recognised by the University) may be considered for admission as external candidates. Such candidates would be required to work in the University for a minimum period of 6 months in one or two spells.

Notes:
(a) No residency requirement for TU qualified candidates.
(b) Part-time candidates are required to submit the “No Objection Certificate” from their parent organisations/ departments/ schools/ centres stating that the candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis and that the candidate’s official duties permit him to devote sufficient time for research.
(c) In case of FN candidates, Research VISA endorsed to TU is required.

Eligibility : NIT Rourkela  M.Tech. Admissions

The candidates should have B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc. or equivalent degree in the discipline as mentioned above with not less than 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in the qualifying examination. There is no relaxation in academic requirement for any category / caste of candidates. The candidates appearing B.E. / B.Tech / M.Sc. (final semester) examination may also apply for the above course. However, they have to produce their marksheet showing 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 in aggregate latest by 30th September 2009, failing which their admission will stand cancelled. Such student must produce a certificate signed by the Principal or Registrar of the College last attended stating that all examinations including practical necessary for award of the degree have been completed in order to be eligible for admission.

In case a course does not get enough students to make the course viable, the students
admitted to that course will be transferred to other courses according to the student�s preference and eligibility given in his application form.

Except for sponsored candidates, selection will be strictly based on GATE Score. In case GATE qualified candidates are not available, admission may be given to other candidates on the basis of marks secured in qualifying degree and a written and /or oral examination.

Sponsored students

Persons employed in other organizations (institutions/industries/research organizations) can be considered under sponsored category provided they satisfy the same qualification norms as above and have a total of minimum two years full time Continuous service in the sponsoring organization. They have to apply in prescribed form (NITR/AC/202) along with the application form (NITR/AC/201) through their employers with suitable endorsement. All sponsored candidates satisfying the above criteria will be called for interview. They are advised to come
with experience certificate and other relevant documents such as pay-slip, appointment order & Identity card with which they can convenience the selection committee about their length of service in the sponsoring organization. The percentage marks requirement for sponsored candidates may be relaxed up to 55% or 6.0 CGPA if documentary evidence of proven research & professional experience (publications, Unpublished works) in the appropriate field are submitted. Sponsored students are not eligible for scholarships and placement facilities.

2. M.Sc. ( 4 Semesters)

Chemistry

B.Sc with Chemistry as a major subject ( Honours in Chemistry preferred) and Mathematics at +2 level.

Mathematics

B.Sc with Mathematics as a major subject ( Honours in Mathematics preferred)

Physics

B.Sc with Physics as a major subject ( Honours in Physics preferred) and Mathematics at +2 level.

Life Science

B.Sc. with Botany, Zoology, Microbiology or another Life Science subject as major subject ( Honours preferred)

Eligibility :

The candidate must have acquired B.Sc. degree with the subject applied for as one of the
subjects (either in pass or Honours) . Mathematics in +2 levels is compulsory for
Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics branches. Admission to the programme will be made on the basis of career marking as decided by the Institute. Candidates appearing B.Sc. final Examination may also apply for the above programme by due date, however they are required to submit their mark sheet at the time of Counselling and admission. Such student must produce a certificate signed by the Principal or Registrar of the College last attended stating that all examinations including practical necessary for award of the degree have been completed in order to be eligible for admission.

3. Slow Pace Programme

All M.Tech. and M.Sc. programmes are also offered in slow pace (3 years for M.Tech and 4 years for M.Sc.) to candidates, employed (including self employment) in industry / organizations in and around Rourkela. It is available to students of both regular and sponsored categories within the approved seats. Eligibility criteria, selection process and fees are same as those for regular or sponsored students studying in normal pace. Candidates enrolling for M.Tech. (Slow pace) programme are required to take one year leave from their sponsoring organization after successful completion of course work to complete their project work unless permitted by Institute to carry out the project in the place of employment on the strength of facilities available
in the company/organization.

Application form may be downloaded and the filled in application form be sent to �The Assistant Registrar (Academic), National Institute of Technology, Rourkela � 769008 (Orissa)� along with photo copies of relevant documents (attestation not necessary) and a non-refundable demand draft of Rs.300/-(Rupees three hundred only) in favour of Director, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, payable at any bank at Rourkela.

There is no provision for on-line submission of application form. The envelope containing application form should be superscribed by Application for M.Tech/ M.Sc. ______________________department (Regular / Sponsored / Slow pace ). The last date for receiving application form is 15th May 2009 (Friday). Application forms received after due date will not be considered. No experience is required for admission of general candidates to M. Tech/ME Programmes.

The institute reserves the right to admission to any candidate and, the decision of NITTTR authorities shall be final in all the cases subject to the approval of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Admission under QIP (Poly) Scheme only for M. Tech/ME Regular Programmes: –

 Admission under this scheme started in the year July 2001. This institute is one of the ten centers in the country to run QIP (Poly) Scheme of AICTE, New Delhi. Since October, 2007, the institute has been coordinating the admission of M.Tech/ME and Ph.D. Programmes in all ten QIP (Poly) Centres as Principal Coordinator.

 Only permanent faculty members of AICTE recognized polytechnics can apply for admission.

Qualifications and Experience for admission

i) A Bachelors degree or its equivalent in the appropriate branch with 50% marks and other eligibility criteria as prescribed by NITTTR, Chandigarh in the concerned ME Programme. A minimum of 3 years teaching experience as on the last date of receipt of application.

Duration of the Programmes


i) For Regular M.Tech./M.E. Programmes

The normal duration of Regular M.Tech./ME programmes including Thesis will be 2 academic years (4 semesters). The maximum period of completion of the programme including Thesis shall be 4 academic years (8 semesters). 2 years (4 semesters) extension in genuine hardship cases is allowed by the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh for submission of thesis.

ii) For Modular M.Tech./M.E. Programmes

The normal duration of Modular M.Tech./M.E. Programmes including Thesis will be 3 academic years, (6 spells, each spell of 5 weeks duration including Saturdays & Sundays). The maximum period of completion of the programme including Thesis shall be 6 academic years (12 spells). 2 years (4 spells) extension in genuine hardship cases is allowed by the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh for submission of thesis.

Qualification and experience for IIT Madras M.Tech Admissions :

Selection Procedure of IIT Madras M.Tech Admissions:
Selection will be made on the basis of marks in the B.E./ B.Tech degree, experience and performance in the interview and / or written test. Candidates who have obtained their degree before 1998 have to necessarily take a written test to be conducted in the respective department of this Institute.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into PhD Programme

(Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have been indicated below)

PhD in Engineering

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master�s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Bachelor�s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Bachelor�s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor�s level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering.The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70%
marks in Master�s level with consistent first class at other levels.

v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master�s level.

vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Design

For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master�s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii) Bachelor�s degree in Design or Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iv) Bachelor�s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor�s level.

vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year
professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Science

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:

i) Master�s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.


PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences

For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master�s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

ii) Master�s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60%
marks.

iii) Bachelor�s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

PhD in Centres

MININMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED, SELF-FINANCED, PART-TIME AND EXTERNAL CATEGORIES

1. Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring
organisation with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.

2. Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.

Categories of PhD Students

The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:

I) REGULAR
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.

II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

Iii) SELF-FINANCED
A student in this category works full-time or part-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.

v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.

vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A valid GATE score in an appropriate discipline and a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks in the qualifying degree (GATE is not required for candidates having BTech/BDes degree from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) fulfilling the following specific requirements :

Bachelor�s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or MSc (Computer Science/Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and GATE score in CS or IT

Eligibility for Regular MDes Candidates

a) 4-year Bachelors� degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field.
OR
4-year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)
b) A minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades in the qualifying degree/diploma.

Note: All candidates (except those having BTech/BDes degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of All India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).

MININMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS FOR MTECH/MDES PROGRAMME

1. Candidate in Sponsored Full-Time and Part-time categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring
organisation with at least 2(two) years of professional experience in the respective field.

2. Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least 2(two) years of professional experience in the respective
field.


Categories of MTech/MDes Students

The Institute admits MTech students under the following categories:

I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full-time for their MTech/MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.

II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech/MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

III) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.

IV) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.

To receive application forms by post, send a request along with a self-addressed unstamped envelope (24cm x 15cm size). Request for form must be sent in an envelope super-scribed with �Request for PhD/MTech/MDes Application form�. For example, a candidate interested in applying for MTech programme, should super-scribe on his/her envelope as �Request for MTech Application form�.

Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials and a DD for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST candidates) drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Guwahati in favour of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati should be sent to the Head of the concerned Department/Centre, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati � 781039, to reach on or before 20 APRIL 2009. The words �Application for MTech/MDes/PhD admission� should be written on the top of the envelope for sending the completed form. The candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Master’s degree in Sciences in an allied area with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid GATE score may also apply. For Ph.D. in BSBE, candidates with MBBS, B.Pharma or M.Pharma Degree may also apply. Candidates with Master’s Degree in Management may apply for Ph.D in Industrial and Management Engineering (IME). M.TECH.: B.Tech/B.E./B.Sc.(Engg.)/M.Sc.in respective or allied area with a valid GATE/UGC/CSIR score; B.Tech. graduates from IITs with an overall minimum CGPA of 6.5 and a CGPA of 8.0 during the last two semesters in B.Tech. may also apply without a GATE score (Such candidates will, however, be not entitled for Institute Assistantship if CGPA is below 8.0). For M.Tech in Biological Sciences and Bio Engineering, candidates with MBBS or B.Pharma Degree area also considered.

M.DES.: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Design or Architecture with a valid GATE/CEED score.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Financial aid (Assistantship/Scholarship) is provided for M.Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc.-Ph.D.(Dual Degree) Programmes. Tuition fee waiver of 50% is provided for M.Sc. (2 years)/M.Sc-Ph.D. (Dual Degree) students after first Semester. Sponsored and part-time candidates are also considered for M.Tech., M.Des. and Ph.D. Programmes. Sponsored candidates do not require GATE qualification. Several attractive Fellowships from Industries/DAE are also available. Guidelines for sponsored and part-time candidates are available in the Information Brochure.

RESERVATION: Reservations will be 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST for the year 2009-2009. Also up to 3% reservation shall apply as per Government of India rules for persons with disability (PD).
