UPSC CDS Exam- Question papers, Study materials and tips

Serving in Indian Defense Services is not just a profession, but  the representation of one’s bravery and patriotism. Combined Defense  Services examination is the main entry point to the Indian Army, Navy and Airforce officer positions. UPSC conducts the examination twice in an year. Minimum entry requirement is Bachelors Degree in concerned subjects. SSB will conduct the interview for the shortlisted candidates of CDS examination.

Admissions to courses Indian Military Academy Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala, Airforce Academy Hyderabad and Officers Academy Chennai will be based on CDS Examination. One can select Regular or Short Service courses. The first three academies offer permanent commission and Chennai Officers Training Academy offers short service commission.

Indian defense Services offers good salary and plenty of chances for promotion, good benefits for self and family, Status in Society and a good stipend in the training period.

Scheme and pattern of CDS Examination

The Priliminary stage contains written examination with three papers in  English, GK and Elementary Mathematics. Each paper will be having 2 hours of time and 100 marks. There will be no Maths paper for those who are applying for Officers Training Academy. Questions will be in Objective mode. The Mathematics paper will be in the standard of SSLC/ 10th. Bachelors degree standard is expected for the other papers. Negative marking is applicable for wrong answers, 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Syllabus of CDS Exam

Syllabus for CDS examination is very vast and you need to start preparing at the earliest. Particular attention should be given to increase the General Knowledge and especially the current affairs section. GK questions are expected from Basic Science, Environment, Indian History, Geography, Politics, Economics, and Current affairs. Reading minimum 3 newspapers (including The Hindu), watching the daily TV news checking the current affairs sections of preparation sites will be beneficial to the candidates for answering the GK and English language section of the paper

There are 5 main topics of the examination.

 Examination Pattern

The exam will have 150 objective type questions, and the total time allowed is 2 hrs. For negative marking 1/3 rd mark will be deducted for every wrong answer. The expected break off of questions from each topic will be like

State Bank of India invited applications from eligible candidates for appointment as Probationary Officers (POs) in Associate Banks of State Bank of India. A total of 2986 vacancies are available in a pan India basis. Any graduate not below 21 years and not above 30 years as on 01.09.2014 can apply for this post. Pay Scale of SBI Associate Bank PO Post:

Selected candidates will be posted in a scale of 14500-600/7-18700-700/ 2-20100-800/7-25700 with a starting basic pay of 14500 Rs. Total compensation varies depending upon the place of posting and the perquisites offered by individual Banks and on an average is about Rs.65,000/- per month at Mumbai.

 Selection and Shortlisting

The selection process of SBI Associate Bank PO exam consists 2 phases. Phase I will consist of an online objective test carrying 200 marks and an offline descriptive test for 50 marks. The Phase I qualified candidates will be called for Phase II. It consists of a group discussion of (20 marks) and an interview of (30 marks).

 Examination Pattern:

 Objective Test: 4 sections are there in this online examination

  • Test of English Language
  • Test of General Awareness, Marketing & Computers
  • Test of Data Analysis & Interpretation
  • Test of Reasoning (High Level)

Each section will have 50 questions carrying 1 marks each. Duration of the test will be 2 hours.

Descriptive Test: This test will follow the objective examination. It is an offline examination where the candidates have to answer in paper/pen mode. The duration will be 1 hour and it will carry 50 marks in total.

SBI Associate PO exam syllabus

As in the SBI PO examination, Associate Bank PO examination dont have a detailed syllabus prescribed by SBI. They just detailed the 4 sections/ topics as said above of the objective examination. Important points to remember in preparation:

In QA section Simplifications is the most important topic like BODMAS calculations, Percentages, Square, Cube, Square roots, Cube roots, Averages etc. Expect upto 20 questions from this area. Every syllabus details Permutations and Combinations and Probability. Expect only very basic questions from this area.

Banking awareness is not an important section for SBI clerk examination as in IBPS examinations. Expect only 5 questions from this area, that will be related to the recent changes in ratios and the like (like current affairs in banking) so do not waste time on Banking history and all.. Non verbal reasoning will be also in basic level. In current affairs have an eye on last elections, ministers and ministries, latest budget and the like.

Exam pattern

Each section have 40 questions carrying 1 marks each, and that makes a total of 200 marks. The total time allotted for the examination is 2 hour and 15 minutes. There is a negative mark of 0.25(1/4) for each wrong answer.

Syllabus and Question Pattern of SBI PO exam 2014

There are 2 papers  in SBI PO examination The first one is Objective paper and the second one is Descriptive.

SBI PO Objective paper (Paper I) syllabus and pattern:
Total marks: 200
Time allotted: 2 hours

Syllabus of Objective Paper (Paper I of SBI PO exam):

The 200 questions are asked from the following areas:

1. English Language
2. Data Interpretation
3. Reasoning
4. The rest of the questions will be from General Awareness, Computer Awareness and Marketing awareness

English Language syllabus: A total of 50 questions are expected, Important areas are Reading comprehension,  Vocabulary, Grammar Corrections, Identification of Errors in sentence constructions, Jumbled sentences etc. Expect High standard questions in Comprehension, rest of the questions will be in moderate difficulty.

Reasoning syllabus: 50 questions will be there in this section also. Expect the difficulty level to be on the higher side for this section. The important areas are Logical Reasoning, Arithmetical reasoning, Analytical reasoning, Series completion, finding missing figures, Completing number and alphabetical series,   Analogies / decision making, Puzzle / Seating Arrangement

Data Analysis and Interpretation syllabus: 50 questions in this section will be in easy to moderate difficulty level. The following sections are considered important: Data Interpretation and manipulation questions from Charts, Graphs and Diagrams including Line charts, pie charts, bar charts and tabular data. Application level questions from probability and statistics, The data manipulation of these questions will contain  of time and distance calculations, BODMAS rule, Calculation of speed and distance, calculation of area, volume, perimeter and application of formulas in algebra, geometry, functions etc.

Syllabus of General Awareness: In this section 10 questions each are expected from Marketing and computer awareness sections and 15 questions each are expected from Banking awareness and current affairs sections.

Negative Marking of SBI PO Paper I
For each incorrect answer a quarter (1/4th ) of marks are reduced

SBI PO Descriptive Paper (Paper II) Syllabus
In this section, expect questions relating to Letter writing (Usually official letters in connection with the normal functioning of a bank branch), Essay and Paragraph writing (Usually related to bank functioning and economy), Precis writing and Reading comprehension.

This paper will have 50 marks and the duration will be 1 hour.

How to prepare for SBI Specialists examination ?

State Bank of India announced the notification for the recruitment of specialist officers for the 2014 session. The SBI SO examination is scheduled to be held on April 19th 2014. Education Observer giving you a preparation guide for all those who are preparing for SBI SO Examination 2014.
One thing you must notice that unlike the previous examinations this year SBI is planning to conduct the Specialist Officer cadre recruitment examination in online mode.

SBI SO Examination Question Pattern

The SBI SO examination is having 2 parts. The first part contain questions from

  • English Language
  • Reasoning and/or
  • Quantitative aptitude

In this section there will be 120 questions of 120 marks, ie one mark each for one question.

IMPORTANT: SBI is not going to consider this section for your ranking purposes. This section is only for qualifying purposes. It means everyone over and above the cut off mark will be considered as having the same rank. For example if they declare 18 as the cut off for English language section, one who scored 18 and one who scored 36 will be considered equal. So the important thing is getting the cutoff minimum.

Paper II is the game turner, here you will be asked 50 questions carrying 100 marks in Professional Knowledge section- the core subject questions for the post you applied for. The score in this section is really matters in the ranking and selection.

The shortcut:
Get minimum cutoff marks in paper I and devote all your study time to the professional knowledge section and score very good marks in professional knowledge, so be busy with your college textbooks than reading banking exam coaching guides.

There is no information available about negative marking or minus marking for wrong answers. So we can ensure that there won’t be any negative marks for wrong answer.

LIC HFL Asst. Exam Syllabus, Pattern and  Model Papers

LIC Housing Finance Corporation LICHFL  conducts online written examination for the recruitment of  LICHFL Assistant Recruitment 2014. The candidates selected as LIC Hosing Finance assistants will be posted in various regions across the country. Total number of expected vacancies is 100.

The Examination will be conducted in online mode on April 6th 2014. Candidates should have a  Bachelor Degree in any discipline from a recognized University/Board with minimum 50% marks. Those having knowledge of computer operations will be given preference. The pay scale for the post will be Rs.15527/- per month + performance linked incentives.

LICHFL Assistant selection process

Selection will be made on the basis of On-line test followed by an Interview of  candidates who qualify in the On-line test. The candidates found successful in the Interview have to undergo Medical Examination.

LICHFL Assistant exam Syllabus:

Questions will be asked from 4 different sections viz:
English Language
Logical Reasoning
Numerical Ability
General Awareness

The standard of the question papers will be somewhat similar to Bank Probationary officer recruitment examination.

LICHFL Assistant Exam Question Pattern:

The On-line test will be having objective type questions. The Examination will be of 120 minutes duration and 50 questions will be asked from each of the above section. Each question carries 1 mark and in total the test will have 200 marks. 0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer. If a question is  left blank,there will be no penalty for that  question.

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary examination or equivalent with 50% marks in Biology/Biotechnology separately, and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology put together, are eligible to apply for MEDICAL programmes.

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary examination or equivalent with 50% marks in Mathematics separately, and 50 % marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together are eligible for admission for Engineering programmes

 Syllabus for KEAM 2014

According to the selection of programmes, candidates need to write 2 papers in the KEAM 2014 Entrance. For Engineering candidates Paper 1 will be Physics and Chemistry and Paper 2 will be Mathematics.

For Medical Entrance Examination Paper 1 will be Physics and Chemistry and Paper 2 will be Biology.

KEAM 2014 Examination Pattern`

Each paper (Paper 1 and Paper 2) will be having 90 minutes duration and will contain 120 objective type MCQ questions. Each correct answer will get 4 marks, thereby the total marks will be 480. For each incorrect answer ONE mark will be deducted from the total score.

Joint Entrance Examination (Main) – 2014- JEE Main is the admission criteria to UG Engineering Programs (BE, B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning )in NITs, IIITs, Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by participating State Governments and more. Please note, togethor with the JEE Main Score, +2/ Class 12/equivalent examination marks of the student will also be considered in calculating the final score.

 JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced) – The admission test for undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.

JEE Main 2014 Examination Pattern

There are TWO papers for JEE Main Exam, Paper I is intended for aspirants of Engineering courses . Paper II is for aspirants to the Architecture/Planning courses.

JEE Main 2014 Paper I

Candidates can opt to write Paper I of JEE-Main 2014 as an Online – Computer Based Test (CBT) or Offline – Pen & Paper Based Test. The examination will have 3 sections having equal weightage viz: Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Objective type questions with four options with single correct answer will be asked for the examination. The total number of questions to be 90, each question will be allotted 4 marks. The duration of the examination will be 3 hours.

 Negative Marking Scheme for JEE Main 2014

One fourth (1/4) of the total marks allotted to the question would be deducted for for each incorrect response. Zero marks will be deducted for no answer.

 JEE Main 2014 Paper II

The JEE Main 2014 Paper 2 will be for the admissions to the B.Arch/ B.Plan. courses. The Paper also contains objective questions with three parts :

Part I – Mathematics.
Part II – Aptitude Test
Part III – Drawing Test

JEE Main Paper II will be a Pen & Paper based exam with a duration of 3 hours.
