Depending on the job profile, a food technologist may have to perform many of the following tasks. Ensure that hygienic conditions, storage and procedures are maintained during the processing and packaging of food. Supervising the cleaning and maintenance of the machinery used in food processing is a major part of this.
They are also required to develop new products, a process that may involve comparing the company's products with those of other brands, participating in surveys providing information on the management of new products, and analysing experimental data and results. The technologist also has to test raw ingredients and processed food for nutritional value and microbiological quality, as well as check foods for colour, taste and flavour. Developing quality control procedures for products manufactured in plants or factories as well as supervising and coordinating the work of technicians is also an important component of the job.
