The Common Admission Test is the basis for selection to the six Indian Institutes of Managements (IIMs) functioning at Kozhikode, Ahamedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore and Lucknow and some other business schools also short list applicants based on the IIM-CAT score for admission to their Management Postgraduate programmes.

CAT covers questions in five broad areas such as verbal ability and reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative skills, data interpretation and logical reasoning. The test comprises 150 to 200 objective type questions and is usually divided into three to four sections.

Eligibility for the postgraduate programmes in management at all IIMs and to appear for IIM-CAT is at least a three-year bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Eligibility for postgraduate programmes in agribusiness management conducted at IIM Ahamedabad is a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Agriculture Sciences/related disciplines or a three-year bachelor's degree in any discipline with a strong interest/background in agriculture, agro/food processing, rural and allied sectors. Students appearing for the final qualifying examination are also eligible to appear for IIM-CAT.

IIM-Kozhikode offers a Postgraduate Programme in Management. Students appearing CAT are automatically eligible to apply for this Programme.
