Quitting programming to move to pursue a media/marketing career.
#1
Hi there,

It's been four months since I am working as a mobile app developer aka software programming. And I think i've just reached the stage where i'm pretty sure it's not for me, i'm just more interested in something along the lines of media/marketing or i'd say some industry which is more people oriented rather than working on a computer writing software. I have a bachelor's degree in computer engineering and now I'm planning to quit the job and move into some marketing/media firm. What is the best way to go about it?

Some ideas I have from talking to people I know are:
-client servicing
-production runner or just production
-PR
-account handling (i.e. handling a client account at a firm, not accounts as in commerce)

It would be a great help if people here could explain a bit more about these occupations I've mentioned above.

Also from talking to people it seems that these roles mostly value soft skills a lot more than any specific skillset. I'm pretty confident about delivering on the soft skills, but what other aspects should I be most working on?

All and any suggestions would help greatly.
Thanks.

Hi,

The media industry today is thriving and flourishing./since you want to change your career, you can start working for a while and gain practical exposure and pursue pdgm/masters/mba later on.

Thanks a lot for this reply.

I want some more ideas on the positions I've mentioned and what will be the difficulty level getting a job?

What sort of interview shooul I expect and will the fact that I'm quitting a field I have a degree in within just 4 months of working in it look very bad to the HR?

It requires great analytical and logical skills to be software developer. In Media and Advertising field what matters is your communication PR is a good choice. You should be good enough to convince people and widen your network. Practical experience has more importance as compared to your academic skills.
